The Mermaid Princess is Suvannamaccha (สุพรรณมัจฉา), meaning "golden fish", daughter of the demon king Thotsakan in the Thai Ramakien. In Thailand she is the root of every mermaid charm: all mermaid amulets are consecrated with her as the principal figure, and her image also appears on the "mermaid flag" used at temple robe-offering ceremonies.

Legend tells that she was ordered to destroy the stone bridge Hanuman was building, but was moved by him and instead led the mermaids to help him finish it. She therefore symbolises softness overcoming strength: winning not by force, but by charm and sincerity that make others lower their guard. To this day Thais see her as a symbol of good luck, found on amulets and auspicious cloth banners.

In traditional belief the mermaid yant belongs to the family of charm and goodwill, signifying charm, likeability and persuasion, so that your words are more readily trusted; it also signifies drawing customers and thriving business. She never fights the waves, yet the whole sea makes way for her.
